Washington and Lee University provides a number of computing and network resources to its students primarily for educational purposes and to its faculty and staff primarily for work purposes. Law Technology Services and Information Technology Services strive to provide a stable, accessible technology environment for use by the University community.
Students are encouraged to bring their personal laptop or tablet into Lewis Hall. Internet access, printing, and network storage are all available through the wireless network. In order for students to connect to the W&L network, their computer must be up to date, certified to be virus free, and have a working virus scanner. The virus scanner should be updated frequently. We require student computers to have a working, updated version of ONE of the following three solutions:
1.Windows Security Essentials,
2.Avast! Free Antivirus
3.Symantec Endpoint Protection (available from the software downloaded page).
Many people ask about our minimum requirements. With the exception of laptops with outdated wireless hardware, if you are happy with the performance of your computer, we can make it work on our network. However, we only support:
•Windows 7 SP1 (Windows 7 is preferred, XP and Vista are supported)
•Mac OS X (10.6.8 is preferred, 10.5 and later are supported)
•NOT SUPPORTED: Linux, Operating systems older than those listed above.
Older laptops with legacy wireless cards may not be able to connect to the Secure channel. You will need to purchase additional hardware, such as a USB wireless device, if this is the case.

B&W Laser printing is available throughout the building and a color laser printer is available on the 4th floor, in front of OCP. Students can print from all public workstations or they can install the printers on their own laptops. You will be charged 10¢ per page (35¢ for color) for all printing that exceeds your ANNUAL allotted subsidy of $80. Print bills will go out at the end of each semester.
Most printers are configured for Duplex and Multiple page printing. The cost is 10¢ per page of paper, so students will be charged for one page even if it is duplex and "two sheets per page".
You can check your account balance and get a detailed print history online at any time. A negative number indicates that you have exceeded your $80 subsidy, and you will be charged the amount shown. If there is a problem with a print job (low toner, etc) you can request a print credit.
If there is any discrepancy in your print history or there is any other printing problem, contact Technology Services immediately by email at LawTech@wlu.edu.
If you are a member of a clinic or an organization, you can print from your account and have the organization billed. The program will be charged 5¢ per page and an accurate accounting of exactly what you printed will be sent to the program director.
If you need to print for an academic program, such as Law Review or Moot Court Board, log in as yourself. When you are ready to print, select the printer with "Special" in the name.
After you send the job to the printer, a box will pop up and ask you to identify your program. Select the correct code, and then press "Print It."
Students can print to the Special Queues from their own laptops. However, they must have the PPop software loaded on their laptop.
This type of printing requires that (1) you are a member of the group (e.g. VC3, LPC, etc.), and (2) the group has permission to use the printer queue. If you encounter an error while printing, contact Technology Services immediately at LawTech@wlu.edu.
