A word about anti-virus software In order for students to connect to the W&L network, their computer must be certified to be virus free and have an up-to-date virus scanner. The virus scanner should be updated frequently. We require Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, which can be downloaded from our web page.
How to connect to the W&L network Your computer must run Windows XP, Vista or Mac OS X to be connected to the network. You must have an up-to-date virus scanner installed before your PC is allowed to connect. For instructions on how to connect to printers and file storage go to the Connect to the Network page. If you need assistance email us at Lawtech@wlu.edu. If you need advanced technical support, there is a fee of 30.00/hr.
Bringing an old computer Many people ask about our minimum requirements. The answer is, if you are happy with the performance of you computer, we can make it work on our network. However, we only support:
- Windows XP (professional is preferred) or Vista (Business is preferred)
- Mac OS X
- NOT SUPPORTED: Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows ME
Most current laptops have built-in Network Interface Cards (NIC) and/or Wireless (WiFi) cards. NIC and WiFi cards should be installed and configured before coming to campus or there will be an additional charge to install the card in your computer.
What about a Tablet PC... Tablet PCs are devices where the mouse and the keyboard are replaced with a stylus. All user input is done with a stylus, much like a Palm Pilot. Although the computers are fantastic feats of engineering, they are still in their infancy. We recommend you wait until the devices and handwriting recognition matures, and Microsoft works the bugs out of the Tablet PC operating system.
University Computing PoliciesWashington and Lee is very lenient with its computing policy. Students are free to use the vast power of the internet both as a learning tool and for entertainment. There are, however, a few limitations that the campus imposes on every person who is connected to the network. The official documents on network policy are listed below.
