Washington and Lee experienced an outbreak of H1N1 (swine) flu virus in April/May 2009, primarily in the undergraduate population. We have continued to monitor influenza reports over the summer and, unlike most previous years, this flu strain has persisted in the U.S. throughout the summer months.
As you probably know from the national media reports, a 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine is expected sometime this fall, and we hope to have this vaccine available on campus for our students. We will continue to communicate with students and concerned family members through our website about any change in the status of the H1N1 virus at W&L. We encourage our students, faculty and staff to continue to practice good health habits (tips are available on our website) and to get the influenza vaccinations (both H1N1 and the regular seasonal flu) as they become available this fall. Our goal is to minimize all influenza illness on our campus so that we have the ability to best respond to the H1N1 virus should we face another outbreak.
The Law School works closely with University officials in the Dean of Students Office and the Student Health and Counseling Center to promote the health and wellness of our law students. If you have any questions or concerns about health issues affecting law students, please contact Sidney Evans, Associate Dean for Student Services in the Law School.
