International Affairs Writer to Speak on "Global Security in 2010"
Lexington, VA • Tuesday, October 19, 2004Kaplan is a regular contributor to The Atlantic and the author of numerous books on international affairs including Balkan Ghosts, The Coming Anarchy, The Ends of the Earth, Eastward to Tartary and Warrior Politics, all of which address tensions between the developed and developing worlds.
As an international correspondent for The Atlantic, Kaplan accompanied the first unit of Marines to assault Fallujah in Iraq after the murder and mutilation last April of four American civilians. In addition to his speech, Kaplan will spend three days in Lexington visiting classes and meeting with students and faculty at Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute.
Kaplan's visit is sponsored by the NASDAQ/SunTrust Program in International Finance and Commerce, W&L's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications and the University's Fishback Program for Visiting Writers.
The visiting writers program, which annually brings an outstanding writer to Washington and Lee University, began in 1996 through a gift from Sara and William H. Fishback Jr., a 1956 W&L alumnus, in memory of Margaret Haggin Haupt Fishback and William Hunter Fishback.
