Law Center Scholar-in-Residence to Discuss Reportorial Privilege and Restitution during December Events

Lexington, VA Thursday, November 15, 2007

This December, Eoin O'Dell, Lewis Law Center Scholar-in-Residence at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, will deliver a public lecture on the journalist's privilege and host a scholar's roundtable discussion addressing restitution in North America.

Professor O'Dell's public lecture is schedule for Dec. 3 beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Lewis Hall Classroom D. The title of the lecture is "The Surest Way to Anarchy? Journalists' Source Privilege in Comparative Perspective".

As part of its celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Justice Lewis F. Powell, the School of Law hosted a symposium in September exploring the extent to which Powell's concurrence in Branzburg v. Hayes continues to inform the issue of reportorial privilege. Professor O'Dell will continue this discussion by comparing the outcome in Branzburg with the law on journalists' source privilege in various European and international tribunals, including the Federal Constitutional Court in Germany and the Irish High Court.

Then, on Dec. 14, Professor O'Dell will host at the School of Law a day-long scholar's roundtable on the topic of "Restitution and Unjust Enrichment in North America". The main purpose of the roundtable is to get Canadian and U.S. restitution scholars, practitioners, and judges together to examine the current legal issues surrounding the law of restitution and unjust enrichment.

"Since the American Law Institute's current project on a Restatement on Restitution and Unjust Enrichment is at a crucial stage, and the Supreme Court of Canada's recent unjust enrichment jurisprudence is proving controversial, this is an opportune time for North American restitution scholars to come together to discuss such current issues in an informal setting," says O'Dell.

More information about the Restitution Roundtable, including registration information, is available online at http://www.restitutionroundtable.org/about/.
