On April 14 during Law Reunion 2012, Washington and Lee School of Law announced the recipients of the Outstanding Alum Award and the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Lizanne Thomas '82L received the 2012 Outstanding Law Alumnus/a Award for her exceptional achievements in the legal profession and her unselfish service to her community and alma mater. Thomas is Partner-in-Charge of the 150-lawyer Atlanta Office of Jones Day and also heads the Firm's global corporate governance team.
While her roots are as an M&A lawyer, Thomas practices, teaches, and lives corporate governance. She participates in more than 100 board meetings per year as counsel to a number of public companies. She has lectured on Dodd-Frank to leading business organizations, companies, and universities throughout the world. She represents special committees in going private and other control transactions, as well as internal investigations involving issues from financial restatements to allegations of executive misconduct. Thomas is experienced in public and private mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, takeover preparedness, and executive compensation as well.
Thomas is a member of the Board of Directors of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. where she serves as chair of the Governance Committee, member of the Compensation Committee, and previously served as co-chair of the Special Committee charged with investigating a variety of allegations relating to the company.
Thomas is an honorary member of Omicron Delta Kappa and honorary member of Order of the Coif. Other honors include The Best Lawyers in America (2007-2012), Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business (2005-2011), Georgia Super Lawyers (2004-2011), and "Top 50 Women Attorneys" in Georgia (2006-2011).
Active in the community, Thomas serves on the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Research Alliance, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Ballet and in various leadership roles for the Woodruff Arts Center, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta and the United Way Tocqueville Society. She is a Trustee of Furman University and former president of the Law Council.
Chong Kim 92L received the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes those individuals who go above and beyond assisting the Law School. Kim is chair of the Law Annual Fund, a former Law Class Agent, an emeritus member of the Law Council, and active in the W&L Atlanta Chapter. Her work is evident in the turnout of her classmates for this reunion and in fundraising success achieved by the class of 92L in honor of their 20th Reunion.
Kim is a highly successful criminal defense lawyer. She is the founder and Managing Partner of the Law Offices of Kim & Kert. She has successfully defended over 4,000 clients.
In addition to her responsibilities as Managing Partner at her law practice, Kim is a Magistrate Judge for Fulton County. She was named a 2005 Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine, as well as being named one of the Best 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association in 2002. She is a member of the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Interpreters and she sits on the State Bar Committee on Post Conviction Capital Representation, which is involved in death penalty appeals.
