12/19/2005 - Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse Launches New Web Site
The Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse at the Washington and Lee University School of Law has launched a new web site offering materials and resources for capital case defense attorneys.

11/23/2005 - Sarah Floyd 2L Wins 2005 Mock Trial
On Friday, November 11th the Moot Court Executive Board hosted the final round of the Annual Mock Trial Competition. Sarah Floyd, 2L, won the competition and Tamara Graham, 3L, was the first runner-up.

11/14/2005 - W&L Mourns the Loss of Professor Roger Groot
Roger D. Groot, longtime faculty member and Class of 1975 Alumni Professor of Law, passed away Nov. 12 of natural causes. He was 63. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, and three children.

11/8/2005 - Students Raise $15,000 for Lexington Free Clinic at 2005 PAD Charity Auction
In what auction organizers are calling a “huge success,” participants in this year's Phi Alpha Delta Charity auction helped raised $15,000 in only two hours, doubling the amount raised by the 2004 auction.

11/3/2005 - Exhibit to Showcase Work, Life, of Coal Miner, Artist and Advocate Mike South
Mike South was a coal miner. He was an Black Lung activist. He was an artist. The unique vision his extraordinary life produced will be on display in the upcoming exhibit, "Paintings and Drawings of Mike South" at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

11/2/2005 - Phi Alpha Delta Sponsors Annual Charity Auction
Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) will sponsor its annual charity auction this Friday, November 4 at 5:30 pm in the Moot Court Room at the School of Law.

10/17/2005 - Strong Showing for Second Years at Moot Court Competition; O’Brien and Dubus Win Top Awards
Second year law student William O’Brien received the Best Oralist award at this year’s Davis Moot Court competition. The Best Brief award went Joanna Dubus, also a second year law student.

10/3/2005 - Warner Appoints Roger Groot to State Forensic Science Board
Roger D. Groot, Class of 1975 Alumni Professor of Law at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, has been appointed by Gov. Mark Warner to the newly formed Forensic Science Board.

9/27/2005 - First Man Released From Death Row by DNA Testing to Speak at the School of Law
Kirk Bloodsworth, the first man freed from death row by post-conviction DNA testing will speak at the School of Law on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:00 p.m. in Classroom B. Bloodsworth will be followed by Donald Salzman, from the Skadden Arps law firm in Washington, D.C. Salzman coordinates the pro bono practice of the firm’s Washington lawyers and represents pro bono clients.

As another busy recruitment season gets underway for the School of Law, Director of Admissions Andrea Hilton Howe and Assistant Director Sarah Nichols began an extensive travel schedule this week that will take them to colleges and law school forums across the country.

9/19/2005 - Sullivan to Deliver Tucker Lecture
Winnifred Fallers Sullivan, Senior Fellow, Martin Marty Center at the University of Chicago Divinity School, will deliver the 57th John Randolph Tucker Lecture on Friday, September 23 at 12:10 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom, Lewis Hall. The title of Sullivan’s lecture is “Comparing Religions, Legally.”

9/12/2005 - W&L Welcomes Director of Law School Relations
The School of Law is pleased to announce that effective September 12, Paul Gardner has joined the School of Law as Director of Law School Relations. Gardner comes to the law school from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry where he served as Director of Development and Executive Director of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina.

9/2/2005 - School of Law to Enroll Up to 15 Students from Tulane and Loyola Law Schools
The School of Law has extended visiting-student status to displaced Tulane and Loyola law students for the fall semester.

8/29/2005 - Center for Law and History Announces Fall Events
The School of Law at Washington and Lee University announces the fall schedule of events for the W&L Center for Law and History, a cross-disciplinary initiative now in its third year.

8/22/2005 - School of Law Welcomes the Class of 2008
On Monday, August 15, the Washington and Lee School of Law enrolled 136 students in the J.D. Class of 2008. This new entering class brings both extraordinary credentials and a wide variety of experiences to Washington and Lee.

8/17/2005 - Brian Murchison Appointed To Head Presidential Search Committee
Brian C. Murchison, Washington and Lee University's Charles S. Rowe Professor of Law, has been appointed by the Board of Trustees to head the University's search for a new president. Former President Thomas G. Burish left the University on August 15th to become provost of Notre Dame University.

7/29/2005 - W&L Law Review Names New Staff Writers
Twenty-four students at Washington and Lee University's School of Law have been named staff writers for the Law Review, completing the staff for the upcoming year's edition, Volume 63. They join an editorial board comprised of 15 third-year students, including Editor in Chief R. Matthew Pearson and Executive Editor E. Kyle McNew.

7/21/2005 - W&L Law Faculty Honored at Virginia State Bar Awards
The Virginia State Bar Association honored two Washington and Lee University School of Law faculty members with prestigious awards at the organization’s annual meeting on June 18.

7/20/2005 - Prof. Roger Groot Receives VBA Pro Bono Publico Award
Professor Roger D. Groot of the Washington and Lee University School of Law received the Pro Bono Publico Award of The Virginia Bar Association (VBA) on Friday, July 15, during the VBA’s 115th Summer Meeting.

7/15/2005 - Chris Bullard, 06L, Selected as National ABA Liaison in Intellectual Property Law
Chris Bullard, 06L, has been selected to serve as national liaison in intellectual property law for the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association.

5/9/2005 - With Fulbright to Ukraine, W&L Law Student Will Build Future While Connecting With Past
Aleksander Mehrle, Washington and Lee School of Law '05, has won a Fulbright award for a year of study at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine. Mehrle's path to the highly prestigious award has been dotted by the emergence of unforeseen career interests, clouded by potential political complications, and paved with a deep personal connection to his proposed place of study.

4/18/2005 - W&L Mourns the Loss of Former Professor Maureen Cavanaugh
Former Washington and Lee University Professor of Law Maureen Cavanaugh has passed away. Cavanaugh, who left W&L last year for a position at the Dickinson School of Law at Penn State, was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain disease for which there is no cure in the fall of 2004.

4/12/2005 - W&L Law Student Wins Third Place in Nonsmokers' Rights Legal Research and Writing Competition
Brad Sidle, a third-year student, participated in a legal writing competition sponsored by the National Center for Nonsmokers' Rights and Professor John Banzahf of George Washington University Law School. Sidle's paper, pertaining with an "on and off work smoking ban for federal employees", brought him third place and $1000. The winners were announced in Washington,DC on April 8-10 at The Second World Conference on Nonsmokers' Rights.

3/31/2005 - Former Ambassador and Attorney to Address First Amendment Issues in White House Leak Case
Lexington, VA • April 8, 2005 — Former U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV and his attorney Christopher Wolf '80L will speak on Thursday, April 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the University Commons Theater on the campus of Washington and Lee University. from Time and the New York Times are facing a serious threat of jail time for refusing to tell a federal grand jury who it was in the Bush Administration who identified Ms. Plame as an undercover agent. The case thus presents difficult and important First Amendment questions.

3/25/2005 - W&L Law Professor and Student Honored by Bankruptcy Association
Washington and Lee University Professor of Law Margaret Howard and third year law student Aaron McCollough were honored at the spring meeting of the American College of Bankruptcy, the premiere organization for scholars, practitioners and judges in that field, on Friday, March 18, in Washington, D.C.

3/4/2005 - W&L Law Students Clinch Regional Mediation Competition Victory
Tim McKeen and Chris Bullard, both second-year students at Washington and Lee University's School of Law, have won first place in the 2005 American Bar Association (ABA) Regional Mediation Competition held at Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, Va., on Feb. 26-27.

1/26/2005 - W&L Alumnus Elected Appeals Court Justice
Judge James W. Haley Jr., a 1964 graduate of Washington and Lee University, has been elected to the Virginia Court of Appeals.

For the last 15 years Haley has been a judge in the Stafford County circuit court. Previous to that he served as the commonwealth attorney and then district court judge of King George County.

Haley, supported by Republicans House Speaker Bill Howell and Senator John Chichester, was elected over Democrat-backed Terrence Ney in a 76 – 18 House vote.

1/12/2005 - Law Alumnus To Become President-Elect of Florida Bar
Jacksonville attorney Henry M. "Hank" Coxe III has become president-elect designate of the Florida Bar. Coxe will be sworn in at the association's annual meeting in Orlando in June, and will assume the presidency in June 2006.

1/12/2005 - Law Alumnus Named to U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
Richmond attorney Ashley L. Taylor has been appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by President George W. Bush. A partner in the firm of Troutman Sanders LLP, Taylor served as the Deputy Attorney General for Virginia from 1998-2001.
