Robert E. Shepherd Jr., professor emeritus at the University of Richmond's School of Law and a leader in legal issues affecting children and families, died Dec. 11 after a battle with cancer. Shepherd was an alumnus ('59A, '61L) of Washington and Lee and a visting professor this semester at the School of Law.

8/8/2007 - Washington and Lee University Mourns Civil Rights Leader Oliver Hill
Oliver W. Hill, prominent civil rights crusader and attorney, died Sunday, Aug. 5, at his Richmond, Va., home. He was 100. Hill received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University in 2000.

Hill was a close friend of the late Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell '29A, '31L, as well as of current Board of Trustees member Robert J. Grey '76L. Commenting on Hill's life to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Grey said the lawyer possessed a sense of fairness and always rooted for the underdog.

6/26/2007 - W&L Law Professor David Bruck Offers Testimony on Federal Death Penalty before Senate Judiciary Subcommittee
Washington and Lee School of Law Professor David Bruck, testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday, June 27. The Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Rights held a hearing discussing oversight of the federal death penalty.

Professor Bruck is director of the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse at the School of Law. He has practiced criminal law since 1976, and since 1980 has specialized in the defense of capital cases at the trial, appellate and post-conviction stages.

6/22/2007 - Professor Louise Halper Named Director of Lewis Law Center
Louise A. Halper, Professor of Law and Law Alumni Association Fellow in Teaching Excellence at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, has been named the next director of the Frances Lewis Law Center.

Established in 1978 with a generous gift from Frances and Sydney Lewis, the Law Center's mandate is to support faculty research and scholarship that advances legal reform.

Morant, who joined the faculty of the law school in 1997, will begin his duties as dean at Wake Forest July 1, 2007.

5/14/2007 - School of Law Honors Graduates at 2007 Commencement Ceremony
The Washington and Lee University School of Law celebrated its 152nd commencement on Saturday, May 12 as 124 J.D. degrees and four LL.M degrees were awarded. The graduates will begin their legal careers in 26 different states and one foreign country, Bosnia-Herzogovina. 18 graduates will go on to judicial clerkships, and 56 percent of employed graduates will work for law firms.

4/13/2007 - International Law Students Travel to Europe to See Human Rights Organizations at Work
Washington and Lee University School of Law students taking Professor Speedy Rice's International Law of Human Rights class traveled to Europe this semester to see up close how the legal procedures and mechanisms they have studied are put into practice.

The students visited international courts as well as non-governmental organizations working for human rights across the globe.

4/13/2007 - School of Law Victorious in U.S Supreme Court and Fourth Circuit Arguments
As reported last year, visiting professor of law Sean Donahue and third-year law student Kate Speiker argued separate cases before the United States Supreme Court and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, respectively. Decisions in both cases were released this spring, and clients represented by the Washington and Lee advocates were victorious in both of them.

Washington and Lee University's School of Law is ranked the 25th best legal program in the country among ABA-accredited law schools, according to new rankings released Friday (March 30) by U.S. News and World Report. The school was ranked 22nd in last year's report.

3/30/2007 - Service Trip to Gulf Coast Brings Focus to Hurricane Katrina Symposium
More than a year has passed since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region, and although thousands of volunteers have traveled to the area to provide relief assistance, a tremendous amount of work remains.

18 students from the Washington and Lee University School of Law saw this up close during their spring break when they joined a nationwide relief effort providing legal services and manual labor in New Orleans.

3/13/2007 - Law Symposium Examines Gender-Relevant Legislation In Muslim and Non-Muslim Countries
On March 30 and 31, a distinguished multidisciplinary group of international scholars and activists will convene at the Washington and Lee School of Law to discuss various women's issues at the Gender-Relevant Legislative Change in Muslim and non-Muslim Countries symposium. Louise Halper, symposium director and professor of law at the School fo Law says that many people assume that Muslim women can't speak for themselves. From her travels in the region, she saw a different picture.

Four students at the Washington and Lee University School of Law have received summer internships through the Shepherd Poverty Alliance. The Shepherd Alliance joins students from Berea College, Bonner Scholar Schools, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Washington and Lee University in summer work with agencies that seek to benefit impoverished members of society.

The students, Peter Massaro '09L, Crystal Doyle '09L, Yue Liu '09L, and Melanie Busby '08L, will participate in their internships during summer 2007.

President Kenneth P. Ruscio announced today the appointment of Rodney A. Smolla as Dean of the Washington and Lee University School of Law. Smolla is currently Dean and George E. Allen Professor of Law at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. Smolla will succeed Acting Dean Brian C. Murchison on July 1, 2007.

2/7/2007 - National Jurist Names Washington and Lee School of Law to Clinical Honor Roll
The National Jurist has named the Black Lung Legal Clinic at the Washington and Lee School of Law as one of the best clinical programs in the nation.

The Black Lung Clinic joined programs from the University of Chicago Law School, the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, and the University of Washington School of Law, among others, on the Clinical Honor Roll announced in the January edition of the magazine.

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) at the Washington and Lee University School of Law has planned a series of lectures during the month of February to celebrate Black History Month.

1/30/2007 - Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals to Hear Arguments at the Washington and Lee University School of Law
On Friday, February 2, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit will hear a day of oral arguments in the Millhiser Moot Court Room at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. A panel of judges from the Court will hear three cases beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. As is customary, the names of the judges will not be released until the morning oral arguments are to take place.

1/29/2007 - Law Students to Assist Local Residents with Tax Returns
Students at the Washington and Lee University School of Law are once again offering free tax help for low- to moderate-income individuals in the Rockbridge County area this year. Beginning February 12 and ending April 2, student volunteers will staff the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) office on Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Community Legal Practice Center located near the law school on the Washington and Lee University campus. The office will be closed March 12 and March 19 while students are on break.

1/24/2007 - Transnational Law Institute Offers Lecture on Saddam Hussein Conviction and Execution
The Transnational Law Institute at the Washington and Lee University School of Law will offer an honorary lecture by Prof. M. Cherif Bassiouni titled 'Iraqi High Tribunal: Saddam Hussein Conviction and Execution'. The lecture, followed by questions, will be held in Lewis Hall Room A from 10:30 to noon on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Bassiouni is one of the world's leaders in the field of international criminal law and war crimes trials.

1/16/2007 - Emeritus Board Member Pamela J. White Appointed to Baltimore Circuit Court
Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. has announced the appointment of Pamela J. White 77L, former member of the Board of Trustees, as a Circuit Court Judge in Baltimore City.

White, who was appointed to fill the seat of a retiring judge, will serve until November 2008, when she will stand for election to a 15-year term.

1/3/2007 - Washington and Lee University to Celebrate the Life of the Mind during Science, Society, and the Arts
Preparations are in full swing as the Washington and Lee University community prepares for the second Science, Society, and the Arts (SSA) research conference. SSA, held for the first time in November 2004, is a campus-wide academic conference where students, faculty and staff participate in reading colloquia and academic presentations with the goal of highlighting the academic life of the campus community.

SSA II will occur on Friday, March 2, 2007 across the Washington and Lee University campus.

12/11/2006 - Black Lung Clinic Awaits Decision in Recent Fourth Circuit Case
On Nov. 30, Kate Speiker ('07L) argued before the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Terry v. Hobet Mining Company. Speiker, who has participated in both the Black Lung Clinic and Public Prosecutors program at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, argued on behalf of the late Harold Terry and his wife, who have been fighting the mining company with the assistance of the Black Lung Clinic for nearly ten years.

11/30/2006 - Law Student Takes on Coal Company in U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals
On Nov. 30, law student Kate Speiker ('07) will argue before the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Terry v. Hobet Mining Company. Unfortunately, win or lose, Harold Terry has already lost--he died in 2002.

If Speiker is successful, and if the coal company chooses not to petition the U.S. Supreme Court, then Terry's benefits will go to his widow.

On Thursday, November 9, students at the Washington and Lee School of Law once again showed their generosity, raising over $16,000 during the 2006 Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) charity auction. This amount surpassed the 2005 auction total, which was itself a record-setting amount.

11/13/2006 - Fall 2006 Moot Court Competition Winners Announced: Negotiations Team Headed to National Championships
The Moot Court Board at the Washington and Lee University School of Law completed its busy fall schedule on Friday, November 10, 2006 as the Mock Trial competition drew to a close. Other competitions decided this fall included the Robert J. Grey, Jr. Negotiation competition and the John W. Davis Appellate Advocacy Moot Court competition.

11/3/2006 - 2006 Mock Trial Competition Underway
Mock Trial, the third competition sponsored by the Moot Court Board at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, is now underway. The competition began on Sunday, October 29, 2006 and will conclude on November 10, 2006.

The administrators for this year's competition are third-year students Sarah Floyd and Diana Grimes.

How does a lawyer prepare to argue a case for the first time before the highest court in the land? Washington and Lee University School of Law Visiting Professor Sean Donahue, an experienced appellate litigator who has argued 30 federal cases and appeared before the highest state courts in Idaho and Maryland, admits this time things are a little more intense.

"I'm taking advice, doing a lot of reading and a few moot courts. Trying to anticipate the tough questions the justices will ask," says Donahue. "I have to condense this case into three of four key points I want to get across, which will be tough to do. I only have 15 minutes."

10/23/2006 - Transnational Law Institute Welcomes Visiting Scholar
The Transnational Law Institute is pleased to welcome Aneta Spaic, associate professor on the law faculty at the University of Montenegro, as an Institute Visiting Scholar. Spaic will be visiting at the Washington and Lee University School of Law from October 23 to November 18.

Spaic is visiting the School of Law in order to pursue scholarship on her Ph.D. thesis titled "Fundamental Breach under the United Nations Convention on the International Sale of Goods". Spaic, whose research interests include international contract law, will also give an academic presentation on her thesis.

Washington and Lee School of Law Professor Mark Drumbl spoke at a symposium on Friday, October 20th, at the George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C. on the new 2006 Military Commissions Act.

The Act, just signed by President Bush, was in response to the June 2006 judgment of the Supreme Court in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld that struck down the previous system of military commissions.

10/12/2006 - British Lord to Discuss Cornwallis Family History in Lee Chapel
Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis, the Right Honorable Lord Cornwallis, will discuss the history of the Cornwallis family during a lecture on Monday, Oct. 23, at 6:00 p.m. in Lee Chapel. Lord Cornwallis is a descendent of General Charles Cornwallis, whose surrender to General George Washington at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781 marked the end of the Revolutionary War.

10/10/2006 - 2007 Rankings from Princeton Review Place School of Law Professors on Top for Third Straight Year
The Princeton Review has again placed the faculty at the Washington and Lee University School of Law first in it annual rankings of law schools. The 2007 results placed Washington and Lee at the top of the "Professors Rock (Legally Speaking)" category and sixth in "Best Overall Academic Experience". The School of Law was seventh in the academic experience category last year.

10/10/2006 - Slate Magazine Editor and Columnist to Discuss the Roberts Court for 2006 Tucker Lecture
Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor and legal correspondent for Slate magazine, will offer some initial impressions on the Roberts Court for this year's Tucker Lecture. Lithwick writes the columns "Supreme Court Dispatches" and "Jurisprudence" for Slate and has covered everything from the Microsoft trial to the calculus of capital punishment.

The lecture is scheduled for Friday, October 20 at 12:00 p.m. in the Millhiser Moot Court Room in Sydney Lewis Hall.

9/28/2006 - Law School Faculty Preview Key Cases from Upcoming Supreme Court Docket
Professors from the Washington and Lee University School of Law will preview several key cases to be argued before the Supreme Court during the Court's 2006-2007 session.

Faculty will frame the important issues of the case, discuss case facts, and explain the routes the cases took through the lower courts before being accepted by the Supreme Court. Scheduled to coincide with the opening of the Court's session, this event is set for Wednesday, October 4 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Stackhouse Theater, Elrod Commons. All are welcome to attend.

9/25/2006 - Students Argue before Mock United States Supreme Court in the 27th Annual John W. Davis Appellate Advocacy Competition
The Moot Court Board at the Washington and Lee University School of Law is well into the second Moot Court competition of the year, the John W. Davis Appellate Advocacy Competition. The Davis Competition, named in honor of alumnus John W. Davis, began on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 and will conclude with the Final Round on October 27, 2006. The administrators for this year's competition are third-year students Mini Kaur and Matthew Morrison.

9/22/2006 - Global Justice and Freedom of the Press Topics for Inaugural Lectures at the School of Law
The Washington and Lee University School of Law is pleased to announce the speakers for two inaugural lectures to be delivered the last week of September.

On Tuesday, September 26, Professor Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University will be the first invited speaker for the newly created Transnational Law Institute. Just two weeks into the start of the school year, the Moot Court Board at the Washington and Lee University School of Law has already initiated its first competition. The Negotiation Competition, newly named in honor of alumnus Robert J. Grey Jr., began Tuesday, August 30, 2006 and will conclude with the finals on September 15, 2006. The administrators for this year’s competition are third-year students Rob Rivers-Benaicha and Adam Hull.

8/25/2006 - Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice Announces 2006-2007 Staff Writers
The editorial board of the Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice at the Washington and Lee University School of Law has announced the winners of the annual writing competition to determine which students will be selected as staff writers. The 14 students join a staff that includes editor-in-chief Yousri Omar, executive editor Stephanie Yost, and managing editor Molly Donnelly.

8/14/2006 - W&L Law Professor Adam Scales to Address Insurance Issues Resulting from Hurricane Katrina at Legal Symposium
Professor Adam Scales will join other legal experts in examining the impact of America’s largest natural disaster at a legal symposium hosted by the Mississippi College of Law in Jackson, Mississippi on Tuesday, August 29.

Topics will include disaster response within the framework of the constitution, insurance and allocating the costs of recovery, and land use issues during rebuilding.

The Washington and Lee University School of Law celebrated its 151st commencement exercises on Saturday, May 12 as 128 J.D. degrees and two LL.M degrees were awarded. In addition to its many academic and public service achievements, this class is notable for its ethnic and geographic diversity. 16 percent of the students in this year's graduating class are ethnic minorities, and graduates represent 29 U.S. states and 7 foreign countries.

5/8/2006 - W&L Law Professor Lyman Johnson’s Scholarship Garners Award
The Corporate Practice Commentator has named Professor Lyman Johnson’s article on corporate officers and business judgment rule one of the ten best corporate and securities articles published in 2005. Published four times a year and reprinting a selection of articles about corporate law, the Corporate Practice Commentator conducts an annual survey of legal scholars teaching in this area to determine this award. Survey participants chose from among 430 articles in selecting the ten best.

In July 1984, police investigated two rapes in the Burlington, NC area. After one of the victims identified him, both by photo and in a lineup, Ronald Cotton was prosecuted and convicted of one of the rapes in 1985. On retrial two years later, a jury convicted him of both rapes. He was innocent of both crimes.

1/26/2005 - W&L Alumnus Elected Appeals Court Justice
Judge James W. Haley Jr., a 1964 graduate of Washington and Lee University, has been elected to the Virginia Court of Appeals.

For the last 15 years Haley has been a judge in the Stafford County circuit court. Previous to that he served as the commonwealth attorney and then district court judge of King George County.

Haley, supported by Republicans House Speaker Bill Howell and Senator John Chichester, was elected over Democrat-backed Terrence Ney in a 76 – 18 House vote.

Jacksonville attorney Henry M. "Hank" Coxe III has become president-elect designate of the Florida Bar. Coxe will be sworn in at the association's annual meeting in Orlando in June, and will assume the presidency in June 2006.

1/12/2005 - Law Alumnus Named to U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
Richmond attorney Ashley L. Taylor has been appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by President George W. Bush. A partner in the firm of Troutman Sanders LLP, Taylor served as the Deputy Attorney General for Virginia from 1998-2001.

Washington and Lee University law professors Thomas Gallanis and Margaret Howard have been elected to membership in the American Law Institute.

The American Law Institute (ALI) cites its exclusive purpose as "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work."

12/8/2004 - W&L Law Shows 200 Percent Increase in Black Student Enrollment
A recent article in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education points to a nationwide trend toward increased enrollment of black students in the nation's accredited law schools. Washington and Lee's School of Law is cited as notable among them, with a 200 percent increase in the past five years. The student body at W&L Law is now 10.8 percent black, up from 3.8 percent in 1999.

"Minority representation in our law class is of vital importance to W&L," said David Partlett, dean of the School of Law. "We recognize that a law class functions best when different views are canvassed. Moreover, a professional must have a broad appreciation of the world that he or she is to practice in. it is for this reason that we have expanded the numbers of international students in addition to our continuing efforts to recruit persons of color and those with diverse views."

Mark Drumbl, associate professor of law at Washington and Lee University, has won the Association of American Law Schools' 2004 Scholarly Papers Competition for his paper "Collective Violence and Individual Punishment: The Criminality of Mass Atrocity."

The library at Washington and Lee University's School of Law is ranked 13th out of nearly 200 law libraries reviewed by National Jurist magazine.

11/15/2004 - W&L Wins First Place at the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition
Congratulations to Jonathan Robbins, Chris Wynn, Tim McKeen, and Chris Bullard for competing at the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition this weekend. Both teams put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the competition and their impressive performances reflected their dedication. As well, the team of Jonathan Robbins and Chris Wynn have brought glory to W&L by winning FIRST PLACE at the competition and they will represent W&L at the ABA National Negotiation Competition in the spring.

J. Scott Fechnay, Class of '69, has been elected to the Washington and Lee University Board of Trustees. He graduated from Washington and Lee with a BA in history. He also earned a MA from Pepperdine University and a MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia.

American Bar Association President Robert Grey will host a National Symposium on the American Jury System on Oct. 14-15, 2004, at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Va.

9/17/2004 - W&L Law Names New Directors of Admissions, Career Services
Washington and Lee University's School of Law has announced the appointment of Andrea Hilton Howe as director of admissions. A 1985 graduate of W&L Law, Hilton Howe has been the school's associate director of career services since 2000.

Hilton Howe will oversee an admissions office that last year was responsible for a 67% increase in the number of applications to W&L's School of Law, resulting in one of the most academically competitive classes in the school's history. The Class of 2007 has an average undergraduate GPA of 3.5 and an average LSAT of 166.

9/15/2004 - Spencer Overton to Speak on the Voting Rights Act
Professor Spencer Overton, Professor of Law at The George Washington University and former Washington and Lee University School of Law Presenter will speak on the Voting Rights Act at 5:00 PM in Classroom A on September 30, 2004. Professor Overton's scholarly interests include property, campaign finance, voting rights, and race.

9/14/2004 - W&L Alumnus to Join Federal Court Bench in Norfolk on Sept. 17
Norfolk attorney and Washington and Lee University alumnus Walter DeKalb Kelley Jr. will be invested on Sept. 17 on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Kelley, who earned bachelor and law degrees from W&L in 1977 and 1981, will replace Judge Henry Morgan, who announced last year that he would be taking senior status on the court. Morgan also is a W&L alumnus from the classes of 1957 and 1960 law.

9/7/2004 - Commonwealth Secretary of Education to Speak
Belle Wheelan, Commonwealth of Virginia's Secretary of Education, will speak to Professor Blake Morant's Law and Education Class on Thursday, September 16, 2004 in the Moot Court Room begining at 9:00 AM. The event is open to the public and all are invited to attend.

Secretary Wheelan, former President of Northern Virginia Community College, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University with a double major in psychology and sociology. While at Trinity, she distinguished herself as an Academic Scholar. She was the first African-American at Trinity to be named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. In 2002, the University awarded Dr. Wheelan with the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

9/1/2004 - School of Law Names New Faculty Members
The Washington and Lee University School of Law has appointed five new faculty members for the 2004-05 academic year. The appointments include David I. Bruck as clinical professor of law and director of the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse; Montre Carodine and Melissa Waters as assistant professors of law; and Peter Kostant and Sean Donahue as visiting faculty.

8/27/2004 - W & L Law Professor to Serve as US Delegate to the International Association of Criminal Law Congress
Law Professor Mark Drumbl will travel to Beijing China to serve as a United States delegate to the International Association of Criminal Law Congress. The Congress, held every five years, will take place from September 13 to 19, 2004. In the past, resolutions adopted at the Congress have led to multilateral treaties and topics this year will include the place of minors in international criminal law, international economic crimes including corruption, and the relationship between national courts and international courts in the prosecution of war crimes.

Drumbl received his BA from McGill University and his MA from Institut d’etudes politiques de Paris/McGill University. He then graduated summa cum laude with a J.D. from the University of Toronto and received his J.S.D. from Columbia University. Drumbl has also served on the University of Toronto Law Review and the Columbia Journal of Transitional Law. He has clerked for Frank Iacobucci of the Supreme Court of Canada and served as a litigator and counsel for various firms. Drumbl began teaching Washington and Lee in 2002 and currently sits as the Ethan Allen Faculty Fellow while teaching International Law; International Organizations; Mass Violence and Human Rights; Global Environmental Governance and Contracts.

8/9/2004 - W&L Law School Alumna Receives One of ABA's Highest Honors
Washington and Lee University law alumna Linda A. Klein has been awarded one of the American Bar Association's highest honors for achieving professional excellence and paving the way for other women lawyers' success.

An Atlanta attorney and 1983 W&L School of Law graduate, Klein received the ABA's Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award at a luncheon during the organization's annual meeting in Atlanta on Sunday (Aug. 8).

8/4/2004 - W&L Law Adjunct Professor Elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation
Lawrence H. Hoover, Jr., Adjunct Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University, has been elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

The American Bar Foundation is the preeminent research center for the empirical study of law, legal institutions, and legal processes in society. The Fellows is an honorary organization of practicing attorneys, judges, and law teachers whose professional, public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession. Established in 1955, the organization of The Fellows encourages and supports the research program of the American Bar Association.

Since 1985, Professor Hoover, of the firm Hoover Penrod, PLC in Harrisonburg, Virginia, has taught Negotiation and Mediation.

8/2/2004 - W&L Law Review Names New Staff Writers
Twenty-four students at Washington and Lee University's School of Law have been named staff writers for the Law Review, completing the staff for the upcoming year's edition, Volume 62. They join an editorial board comprised of 14 third-year students, including Editor in Chief Jennifer R. Belcher and Executive Editor M. Todd Carroll.

The second-year students were chosen from a pool of about 60 candidates—more than half of the Class of 2006—following a rigorous competition and selection process.

7/30/2004 - W&L Law Professor to Deliver Keynote Address at SOLINET Meeting
Law Professor and Law Librarian Sally Wiant will deliver the keynote address at the August 2, 2004 meeting of the SOLINET Virginia Users Meeting. Professor Wiant's address will focus on the U.S. Patriot Act.

SOLINET is The Southeastern Library Network, a membership network of libraries and other information organizations, that works to provide leadership for cooperative action, improve access to information, and enable members to effectively address the region's needs for education, economic development, and improved quality of life.

At Washington & Lee, Professor Wiant teaches courses on copyrights and patents as well as trademarks and unfair trade practices. Prior to coming to Washington & Lee to pursue her J.D., Professor Wiant received her B.A. from Western State College and her M.L.S. from the University of North Texas. Professor Wiant has served as Assistant Librarian for Circulation at Texas Tech University and as Assistant Librarian at Washington and Lee University, before becoming Law Librarian and Assistant Professor of Law.

7/29/2004 - W&L Law Professor's Work Cited in Conn. Supreme Court Ruling
The Connecticut Supreme Court, in its ruling this week in a free speech-private property case, cited a successful legal approach put forth by Professor Ronald Krotoszynski Jr. of Washington and Lee University's School of Law.

The case, United Food & Commercial Workers Union, Local 919, AFL-CIO v. Crystal Mall Associates, L.P., involved the union's use of the mall's common areas to distribute literature and talk with the public about employee rights under state and federal laws.

7/12/2004 - W&L Law School's Legal Clinic Prevails in 4th Circuit Court Case
Three days before her May graduation from Washington and Lee University's School of Law, Shellie Lynne Sewell presented oral arguments in a black lung case before the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sewell, of Randallstown, Md., recently was notified that her arguments on behalf of Jimmy Lucas, a longtime coal miner who was denied black lung benefits shortly after his retirement, were successful.

7/1/2004 - Former W&L Law School Dean Penned Brief in Detention Cases
Barry Sullivan, former dean of Washington and Lee University's School of Law, wrote an amicus brief in the Hamdi v. Rumsfeld case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that U.S. citizen Yaser Esam Hamdi has the right to challenge his detention in a Naval brig in court.

7/1/2004 - Law Professor to Foster Programs Focused on Global Environmental Policy, Economics and Law
During July, University President Thomas Burish will be accompanied by Law Professor Mark Drumbl and Undergraduate Professor Jim Kahn during a two-week visit to the Universidade Federal do Amazonas and the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense to develop Washington and Lee's exchange programs. These programs are to focus on global environmental policy, economics, and law. During the summer of 2003 Drumbl and Kahn
co-facilititated a course entitled Global Environmental Governance at the Universidade Federal do Amazona, which focused on the legal and economic regimes responsive to problems such as climate change and biodiversity.

Drumbl, the Ethan Allen Faculty Fellow, has taught at Washington and Lee since 2002. His main course focuses are International Law, International Organizations, Mass Violence and Human Rights, Global Environmental Governance, and Contracts.

6/30/2004 - Former W&L Law School Dean Penned Influential Brief in Guantanamo Bay Case
Barry Sullivan, former dean of Washington and Lee University's School of Law, wrote one of the amicus briefs in the Hamdi v. Rumsfeld case in which the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that foreign nationals being held at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detention in court.

6/28/2004 - W&L Law Alumnus to Head American Bar Association
Robert J. Grey Jr., a 1976 alumnus of Washington and Lee University's School of Law and a highly regarded Richmond attorney, will become the 128th president of the American Bar Association (ABA) on August 9, 2004 at the association's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Grey will serve a one-year term at the helm of the ABA, which, with 410,000 members, is the largest voluntary professional group in the world representing practicing and academic attorneys nationwide.

6/8/2004 - Associate Dean of Administration and Technology to Present at CALI
John Keyser, Associate Dean of Administration and Technology will present at CALI, the Computer Assisted Legal Instruction Conference, in Seattle on June 19th. Keyser will present his paper with Gary Banks, Assistant Dean for Technology at the University of Virginia.

Keyser's presentation, "Exploring the “it” in IT" will focus on how as technology has become more pervasive in academia, IT personnel have been asked to do almost everything at one time or another. In addition to traditional IT roles, IT is often asked to assist with project management, facilities management, communications, HR and a host of other tasks. As support needs have escalated, often without a corresponding increasing in staff or budget, the strain on dedicated and talented IT staff has increased. Many individuals and departments have been forced to re-evaluate their institutional roles. This talk will explore the role of IT and IT administration in our institutions. Keyser and Banks will attempt to explore the "it" IT should be doing and what we should expect and demand from our constituents and administrations.

6/1/2004 - Law Professor to Serve as Panelist on United Nations Law-Making and Standard Setting
Washington and Lee University School of Law Professor and former Dean, Rick Kirgis, will serve as a panelist for a session on United Nations Law-Making and Standard Setting, as part of the larger program Global Issues Facing the United Nations on June 7 - 18, 2004 at the Columbia University Law School.

The program is co-sponsored by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and by the Columbia University Law School. Kirgis' topic is "Law-Making by Four Specialized Agencies of the United Nations: the International Maritime Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Labor Organization and the World Health Organization."

Kirgis, the Law Alumni Association Professor of Law, earned his B.A. from Yale University and J.D. from University of California (Berkeley) graduating Order of the Coif. At UC-Berkeley he served as Assistant Notes and Comments Editor for the California Law Review. He was admitted to practice in Colorado and Virginia and served as judge advocate, U.S. Air Force, 1961-64. He then went on to work for Covington & Burling, Washington, D.C. before entering academia. He has taught at the University of Colorado, U.C.L.A., the University of Michigan, Cornell, the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia, and Hastings. At Washington and Lee he has served as Director of the Lewis Law Center, Dean and Professor. He teaches Contracts, International Law, Conflict of Laws, and Foreign Relations Law.

5/31/2004 - Director of Law Technology Services to Present at Conference
Dirk van Assendelft, Director of Technology Services, will present software he has developed to monitor public computers and report on public computer labs usage at the June CICV Users Meeting in Norfolk Virginia. The software, called NT User Tracking System (NUTS), lets the Technology Services staff in the Law School be proactive in identifying and fixing problem computers, and lets the administration track lab usage in order plan for and adjust lab configurations.

The Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) is an association of 25 Virginia independent colleges and universities. CICV works to promote the interests of non-profit, independent higher education in Virginia.

5/28/2004 - Law Student Wins Prize in AHLA Essay Contest
Judges for the American Health Lawyers Association's 2003-2004 Student Writing Competition on Corporate Responsibility have awarded Third Prize to James Braswell for his paper entitled, "Sarbanes-Oxley and Non-Profit Health Organizations."

Braswell, a third year law student from Pasadena, MD will receive complimentary registration for AHLA's upcoming annual meeting in New York City (June 27-30, 2004) and a cash award.

"This is a wonderful achievement, I am very proud of him," said Timothy Jost. Jost, a professor of Health Law, Comparative Health Law and Property has taught at Washington and Lee University since 2001.

5/25/2004 - Law Professor Played Host for Radio Conversation
Law professor Brian C. Murchison hosted a radio conversation with the two declared candidates for Lexington/Rockbridge County Commonwealth’s Attorney on Tuesday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m. on WLUR, the radio station on the campus of Washington and Lee. The station call number is 91.5 FM.

The candidates, H. David Natkin and Robert N. "Bucky" Joyce, Jr., are both alumni of Washington and Lee. Natkin, a 1983 law graduate, has been a trial lawyer, defense attorney, and public defender in a career spanning over twenty years in Lexington and Rockbridge County. Joyce, a 1981 law graduate, has served as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for eighteen years. On July 1, he assumes interim duties as Commonwealth’s Attorney when Gordon Saunders, the current official in that position, becomes a judge in the General District Court.

Voters will decide between Joyce and Natkin in a special election in November. The winner will serve out the remaining three years of Saunders’ current term.

"The purpose of the show was to heighten public awareness of this election and the candidates," said Professor Murchison. A member of the law faculty since 1982, Murchison is the Charles S. Rowe Professor and teaches mass media law, torts, and administrative law.

5/25/2004 - Law Staff to be Honored
The 14th Annual University Recognition Banquet will be held on June 4th to recognize colleagues who have attained various employment milestones, and to honor individuals who will be retiring at the end of the academic year. This year the Washington and Lee University School of Law will honor six staff members.

Jean M. Eisenhauer and Linda S. Newell will be honored for Thirty Years of Service and Thomas A. Williams will be honored for Twenty-Five Years of Service. Daniel C. Coffey, Catherine H. Falls and Carole M. Shorter will be recognized for Twenty Years of Service and Carol J. Kirby will be recognized for Fifteen Years of Service.

5/25/2004 - Professor Continues Work on Master's of Theological Studies
Professor Ann Massie has switched hats for the summer and has taken the role of student. Massie is spending the summer taking a course at Candler Divinity School at Emory University in her continuing fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's in Theological Studies. Massie expects to complete the degree in the Spring Semester of 2005.

“It represents my long-time interest in law and religion--I have taught seminars on that subject in the past, and last year co-taught a Seminar in the Law School in American Religion and American Law with Winston Davis, from the Undergraduate Religion Department,” said Massie.

Massie received her B.A. from Duke University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to receive her M.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the University of Virginia graduating Order of the Coif and as a member of the Virginia Law Review. Massie has served as an Editorial Assistant for Yale University Press, and as an attorney for various practices and the Federal Trade Commission. She has also clerked for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson and served as a Washington and Lee University School of Law professor since 1985.

In addition to her recent Law and Religion class, Massie also teaches Constitutional Law; Constitutional Law Seminar; Health Law and Law & Medicine.

5/24/2004 - Law Professor in TV Film on Brown v. Board
Washington and Lee University Law Professor Doug Rendleman has taken to the screen, playing a leading attorney in "The Turning Point: Brown v. Board of Education."

The television documentary, recently produced in Virginia by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Commission, is a dramatization of the argument before the U.S. Supreme Court and its landmark decision against racial segregation in the nation's public schools.

The film, honoring this year's 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board ruling, will premiere in downtown Richmond on Sunday, May 16, at 6 p.m. in the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts at 600 E.Grace St.
Rendleman, a widely published author and expert on injunctions, remedies and contempt issues, was cast in the film as John W. Davis, a W&L alumnus, former U.S. presidential candidate and the attorney who represented the state of South Carolina in Brown v. Board.

"It was a totally new experience," said Rendleman, W&L's Robert E.R. Huntley Professor of Law and a former director of the W&L School of Law's Frances Lewis Law Center. "I earn my living standing up and talking to groups – but video cameras are different."

Dean David Partlett will present his paper, "Distance Learning: Loosening the Ties that Bind," at the Association of American Law Schools Conference on Educating Lawyers for Transnational Challenges.

This conference will bring together 150 legal educators, representing over 50 countries and all of the world’s major legal systems. It is designed not only to bring about a dialogue concerning the education of graduates for a transnational law practice, but also to consider formulating a possible curriculum outline for a law school that seeks to educate its graduates for such a practice. It is also expected that this conference will lead to the establishment of an International Association of Law Schools to facilitate cooperation among the world’s law schools, including the development of partnerships between law schools with significant resources and those that have significant resource needs. The Association is expected to develop information exchange programs and a series of programs to help advance the curricular objectives, and a better understanding of different legal systems and cultures.

5/13/2004 - Law School to Host Spring Meeting of Virginia Association of Law Librarian
On Friday, May 14, 2004 law librarians from across the Commonwealth will meet in Lewis Hall for their Annual Spring Meeting. The program, The case of the Eccentric Ex-Prodigy, is a look back at the celebrated privacy case involving the New Yorker magazine and a look forward to the U. S. supreme Court's possible direction in invasion of privacy cases. The session will update the theory of privacy by bringing in Bartinicki v. Vopper, 532 U.S. 514(2001), a case involving the intercepted cell phone conversation and will discuss a cause of action for the invasion of privacy.

5/7/2004 - U.S. Circuit Court Judge to Address Law School Graduates
Over 125 men and women will process down the historic Front Lawn to Lee Chapel for Washington and Lee University's School of Law commencement exercises on Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m.

Addressing the graduates is the Honorable Harry T. Edwards, the former chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, on which he continues to serve.

4/28/2004 - 3L Awarded the Oliver White Hill Student Pro Bono Award
Mark Kennedy, a third-year law student, has won the Oliver White Hill Student Pro Bono Award. The Hill Award is given by the Virginia State Bar Special Committee on Access to Legal Services, and "recognizes extraordinary achievements of outstanding students in the pro bono arena." Kennedy will be presented with the award at the Fourteenth Annual Pro Bono Conference, on May 13, 2004.

During Kennedy's first summer in law school, he worked for the D.C. Prisoners' Legal Services Project. Kennedy also worked for a public interest firm in New York City and at Washington and Lee he volunteers for many projects, including serving as the University's National Lawyers Guild Chapter President, raising money for AIDS awareness and working with recycling efforts. He has also organized a new campus initiative, "Men of Action," to raise awareness about violence against women.

In Kennedy's nomination letter, the Elizabeth Peck, Director of Career Services, noted that "Only when I pressed did he really let me know just how much work he has done. In a crowded room he is not the first person you spot; he's the guy who is quietly getting the work done while others talk. To honor someone who seeks to do good because it is the right thing to do, rather than because he may be later recognized, seems, to me, the best use of your award."

4/7/2004 - Two Law Students Selected for Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy
Stephen Brownback and Jared Hembree have been selected to serve on the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy (HJLPP) 2003 National Symposium Editorial Board. Brownback and Hembree will serve as Editors of this year's symposium issue (Vol. 28, No. 1). The symposium edition will
contain articles presented at the 23rd Annual Federalist Society Student
Symposium, which took place on February 20th and 21st, 2004 at the
Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee. The topic of
the symposium was "Private Law: The New Frontier for Limited
Government."

The Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, published thrice annually,
is the most widely circulated student law review in the country and the
nation's leading forum for conservative and libertarian legal
scholarship. The late Stephen Eberhard and former Senator and now
Secretary of Energy E. Spencer Abraham founded the HJLPP twenty-seven
years ago, and many journal alumni have risen to prominent legal
positions in the government and at the nation's top law firms.

The Journal's Board of Advisors includes two U.S. Senators, four U.S.
Court of Appeals Judges, and leading conservative and libertarian
scholars. Recent authors include Viet Dinh, John Yoo, Eugene Scalia,
and Judge Guido Calabresi. In the past, the HJLPP has published pieces
by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Justice Antonin Scalia, and Justice
Clarence Thomas.

This is the second consecutive year that Washington & Lee law students
have served on the HJLPP Symposium Editorial Board. In 2003, Ryan Berry and Jim Coleman served as Executive Editor and Editor, respectively.

4/2/2004 - Congressman Bob Goodlatte to Deliver Second Annual Powell Lecture
U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte, from the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia, will deliver the 2nd Annual Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Distinguished Lecture on April 14, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room in Sydney Lewis Hall.

In 2002, the students of Washington and Lee University’s law school founded the Powell Lecture Series in honor of former Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Justice Powell graduated from Washington and Lee in 1929 and from its law school in 1931, and he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972. The students created the lecture series with the aim of bringing preeminent legal scholars, public servants, and practitioners to campus annually to deliver a public lecture. Among the various lectures that occur annually in the law school, the Powell Lecture is unique in that it is entirely student managed. The students decide who to invite, organize and publicize the lecture, and fund the lecture through student activity fees.

Congressman Bob Goodlatte, who has represented the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia continuously since 1993, will be this year’s presenter. The Congressman is the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee and the Select Committee on Homeland Security. His subcommittee assignments include the Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property Subcommittee, and the Cybersecurity, Science, and Research & Development Subcommittee. Congressman Goodlatte graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law and earned an undergraduate degree in Government from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Immediately following the address, the Washington and Lee Federalist Society will be hosting a reception on the Law School Patio honoring Congressman Goodlatte.

3/26/2004 - Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court to Speak at W&L
Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court William K. Suter will speak at the Washington and Lee University School of Law on Wednesday, April 7 at 4 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. His talk, "Today's Supreme Court," will be followed by a question and answer session and a reception in the Moot Court Lobby.

3/4/2004 - Law School to Host American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team
This year the School of Law will host an American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team. The 16 hour relay will take place on May 14 and 15, 2004.

Members of the Law School community will be taking turns walking to show their support of cancer survivors as well as honor those that have been lost. The current Relay for Life team is seeking donations to sponsor their walk. Sponsors may also choose to purchase luminaries, used to line the walk area, in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of victims.

3/1/2004 - 2004 Mock Convention Taps Kerry as Democratic Nominee
Every four years, the students of Washington and Lee University hold a Mock Convention for the party out of the White House. The purpose of this event is to correctly predict the nominee for this political party.

On Saturday, student delegates representing all 50 states cast their votes and tapped Senator John Kerry as the Democratic Nominee for the 2004 Presidential race with Senator John Edwards receiving the Vice Presidential Bid.

Billed as the nation’s most accurate mock convention since its inception in 1908, Washington and Lee’s convention cannot claim to be the oldest such exercise; Oberlin College has one that dates back to pre-Civil War days. Nevertheless, for consistent accuracy—and eye-filling opulence—the Mock Convention simply has no peer. With 17 correct predictions in 22 attempts, the convention has been described by Time as the “biggest and boomingest” of all amateur gatherings. Newsweek, not to be outdone, promptly dubbed it, “the most realistic” student conclave. It has been applauded on the floor of the U.S. Senate as an “outstanding practical experiment in politics.”

Only time will tell is Washington and Lee University can add another feather to its cap by having correctly predicted the 2004 nominee, until then we will all be waiting and closely watching.

1/21/2004 - National Democrat Leaders to Address W&L's 2004 Mock Convention
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Florida Rep. Jim Davis, and founder of the Alliance for Democracy Ronnie Dugger have joined the growing list of confirmed speakers for Washington and Lee University's 23rd Mock Convention on Jan. 30-31.

Former Oklahoma Sen. David Boren and Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor also are scheduled to speak.

The nation's most accurate Mock Convention will rev up on Thursday, Jan. 29 with a rousing speech from W&L alumnus Jim Davis, and end Saturday, Jan. 31 with the students' prediction of the Democrat's nominee to take on President George Bush.

"We've been fortunate to secure some well-respected leaders in the Democratic Party to participate with us," said Convention Personnel Chairman Jacquelyn Clark, a W&L senior. "These initial confirmations coupled with our close negotiations with several potential keynote speakers are a huge step towards our success in a couple of weeks."

Founded in 1908, the Washington and Lee Mock Convention is a completely student-run event that predicts the presidential nominee for the party currently out of the White House. After more than two years of planning and months of grassroots research in all 50 states and four U.S. territories, more than 1,600 current W&L students will try to live up to Mock Con's 92 percent accuracy rate. The students have been wrong only once since 1948.

In addition, they will try to replicate the events and political process surrounding the actual Democratic National Convention that will take place in Boston this summer.

To kick off the weekend's events, W&L alumnus and Florida Rep. Jim Davis will address students on Thursday evening, Jan. 29, in Lee Chapel. Davis is a national co-chair of the New Democratic Coalition, a group of moderate House Democrats who promote bipartisan solutions.

The 2004 Mock Convention festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a parade in downtown Lexington.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will call the Mock Convention to order at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, as he also will do at the actual Democratic Convention in June. Menino has served three terms as Boston's mayor and is the first Italian-American to hold the position. He also is president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Friday's session will continue with Oklahoma's former Governor and Senator David Boren. After serving as governor from 1975-1979, Boren spent 15 years in the Senate. He was the longest-serving member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Boren currently serves as the 13th president of the University of Oklahoma.

Ronnie Dugger, co-founder of the Alliance for Democracy and founding editor of the Texas Observer, also will speak on Friday. The Alliance for Democracy is an organization dedicated to end corporate dominance.
Dugger is one of presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich's major supporters. In 2002, he attempted to run as the Green Party candidate in the New York senate race, which would have pitted him against Hillary Clinton, but he lost the Green primary.

Friday night's Mock Con events will conclude with Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor. Taylor is known for his conservative Democratic politics and has served as a congressman since 1989. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Saturday's session will begin at 9 a.m., concluding late Saturday, when the state and U.S. territories' delegations cast their votes for who will be the Democrats' nominee to oppose President George W. Bush.

1/16/2004 - Professor Dorothy Brown Selected as Keynote Speaker
Dorothy Brown, Washington and Lee University School of Law Professor,has been selected to serve as the keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Program on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 7:00 PM in the University Commons Theater.

The event will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and begin with a birthday celebration dinner at the Marketplace form 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Rita Dove, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal in the Humanitities and former Poet Laureate of the United States will give a public reading from her work in Lee Chapel at 7:30 PM on January 22, 2004. Ms. Dove is currently the Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia. Her most recent collection of poems is ON THE BUS WITH ROSA PARKS. 1/8/2004 - Dr. Larry Richard to Speak
Dr. Larry Richard, a former trial lawyer and a principal with Altman Weil, Inc., specializing in behavioral science consulting, training, and leadership development for the legal profession, will be speaking on Monday, January 12, at 12:30 p.m. in Classroom A. Dr. Richard is an internationally known expert in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a widely used personality test that explains variations in personal style among lawyers and others, as well as several other models of personality and values. His topic is Career Choice and Job Search Style. This presentation is designed to build on the concepts explored in First Year Orientation and in individual Myers-Briggs sessions with members of the Career Services staff.

12/12/2003 - Black Lung Clinic Students Represent Clients in Hearings
On Thursday, December 4, 2003, two Black Lung Clinic students, Chris Vrettos, '04L, and Stephanie Dawson, '04L, represented clients in separate Black Lung hearings held in Beckley, WV before Judge Daniel L. Leland. Black Lung, the common name given to Coal Miner's pneumonoconiosis and silicosis, is a job related diseased caused by the inhalation of coal dust and dust containing silica. When this dust enters the lungs, the lungs begin to deteriorate and make breathing difficult. The silica causes scar tissue to form in the lungs, thus reducing the lungs ability to remove oxygen from the air.

Black Lung cases fall into two categories - 'living miner cases' and 'survivor cases.' A living miner case is brought by the miner himself for federal benefits whereas a survivor's case is brought by the widow of a miner. Chris Vrettos represented Eugene Perdue in a living miner's case. Vrettos' case was defended by the federal Black Lung Trust Fund. This is the entity that would stand to pay benefits if no mining company or "no responsible operator" exists to pay. Dawson represented Rosie Mills in a survivor's case against the West Virginia Occupational Pneumonoconiosis Fund. The Fund is a state chartered insurance company that represents mines that are too small or too in debt to pay claims.

Both cases were received in the Black Lung Clinic in 2002. Initial evidence was gathered and prepared by students during the 2002-2003 school year and throughout the summer. Vrettos and Dawson conducted the final preparation of the cases for the hearings including receiving all evidence from experts, exchanging evidence with opposing counsel in advance of the hearing and preparing witnesses.

During the hearings, both students introduced medial evidence into the record, made opening statements, and conducted the direct examination of the clients. Vrettos and Dawson will submit a written closing argument to the court in early February. The argument, similar to an appellate brief, will discuss the procedural posture of the case, the facts of the case and will argue why their medical evidence is superior to that offered against their clients.

"I have been in the Clinic for four years, and these were two of the best examples of student work that I have seen," said Jim Phemister, Professor of Law and Supervising Attorney for the Black Lung Clinic. "Almost as impressive as Chris and Steph's work, however, was the fact that six of their classmates drove over that morning in the snow and ice so that they could see their classmates at work. Given that they had to drive in bad weather, leave at 7am, give up virtually an entire day, and do it all right before exams started, I thought it was an amazing show of support."

12/8/2003 - End of Fall 2003 Semester Brings Fond Farewell to Visiting Faculty
During the Fall 2003 semester, the Washington and Lee Law Community was joined by four outstanding faculty - Geraldine Szott Moohr, Roger Sherman, Cheryl L. Wade and Sean H. Donahue.

Professor Moohr is a graduate of the University of Illinois and earned her M.S. from Bucknell University and her J.D. from The American University. Upon graduation Moohr clerked for the Honorable James M. Sprouse of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Her areas of expertise include white collar crime, federal criminal law, federal fraud offenses, employment law, employment discrimination and sexual harassment. Professor Moohr is a member of the University of Houston Law.

Professor Sherman is a graduate of Grove City College where he majored in Mathematics. Sherman went on to receive his M.B.A. in Finance from Harvard and a M.S. and Ph.D. both in Economics from Carnegie-Mellon University. Sherman is the recipient of several distinguished fellowships and has served as Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. Sherman is a member of the University of Houston faculty.

Professor Wade is a graduate of SUNY and received her M.A. from St. John's and her J.D. from Hofstra where she graduated with distinction. One of Wade's recent publications includes "The Impact of U.S. Corporate Policy on Women and People of Color." Wade will again visit the W&L Community in March for the Critical Race Theory Symposium.

Professor Donahue is a graduate of Columbia University, magna cum laude, and received his J.D. with high honors from the University of Chicago Law School. Professor Donahue is a member of the Order of the Coif and was law clerk to Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and to Justice John Paul Stevens, U.S. Supreme Court. Professor Donahue will remain in Lexington and teach throughout the spring semester.

11/19/2003 - Law & Education Guest Lecturer
Douglas L. Guynn, Esq. of Wharton, Aldhizer & Weaver PLC in Harrisonburg, Virginia will be the guest lecturer at the November 21st Law and Education Class meeting.

Mr. Guynn received his law degree from the University of Virginia, where he was elected to the Editorial Board of the Virginia Journal of International Law. A member of the Virginia State Bar since 1980, Mr. Guynn does education, commercial and employment work. He is active in education issues, having helped establish and lead the Valley Alliance for Education, and has chaired the Virginia Council of School Attorneys and Education Law & Local Government Group (2001). Mr. Guynn is also a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation. He is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judicial Conference. Mr. Guynn served as General and Special Counsel to Numerous Educational Boards, such as: County of Augusta; City of Buena Vista; County of Rockbridge and City of Staunton.

11/19/2003 - W&L Law Alumna Appointed Judge in Delaware
The Hon. Mary Miller Johnston, a Washington and Lee University School of Law graduate, has been appointed to the Superior Court of Delaware for a 10-year term.

Judge Johnston received her J.D., cum laude, in 1984 from W&L's School of Law, where she served as lead articles editor of W&L's Law Review. Johnston also earned a B.A. in music from Wittenberg University, from which she graduated magna cum laude, and an M.A. in music from Northwestern University.

Before her appointment to the bench this fall, Johnston served as chief counsel of the Delaware Supreme Court's Office of Disciplinary Counsel, where she prosecuting attorney discipline cases and matters involving the unauthorized practice of law.

Johnston formerly was a partner in the law firm of Morris, James, Hitchens and Williams, practicing primarily in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation.

She is past chair of the Delaware State Bar Association's Women and the Law Section; a former member of the Bar Association's Pro Se Litigation Assistance Committee; and past president of the Board of Children & Families First. Johnston is a member of the Delaware Supreme Court's Permanent Advisory Committee on the Delaware Lawyers' Rules of Professional Conduct and the Court's Professionalism Committee.

Judge Johnston's current term will run through Sept. 25, 2015.

She is married to William Johnston, a 1982 graduate of W&L's School of Law.

11/19/2003 - Mary Miller Johnston, '84L, Appointed to Superior Court of Delaware
The Honorable Mary Miller Johnston was appointed to the Superior Court of Delaware on September 25, 2003. Judge Johnston received her J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law, cum laude in 1984, where she served as Lead Articles Editor of the Law Review. She also has a Bachelor of Music degree from Wittenberg University, magna cum laude, and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University.

Before coming to the bench, Judge Johnston served as Chief Counsel of the Delaware Supreme Court's Office of Disciplinary Counsel, prosecuting attorney discipline cases and unauthorized practice of law matters. She formerly was a partner with Morris, James, Hitchens and Williams, practicing primarily in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation.

Judge Johnston is past chair of the Delaware State Bar Association's Women and the Law Section and was a member of the Bar Association's Pro Se Litigation Assistance Committee. She is a member of the Delaware Supreme Court's Permanent Advisory Committee on the Delaware Lawyers' Rules of Professional Conduct and the Court's Professionalism Committee. She is past President of the Board of Children & Families First.

Judge Johnston's present term ends September 25, 2015.

She is married to William Johnston, a 1982 graduate of the Washington and Lee School of Law.

11/17/2003 - Mock Trial Winners Announced
On Friday, November 14th the Moot Court Executive Board hosted the final round of the Annual Mock Trial Competition. The annual competition provides participating students with the opportunity to plan litigation strategies, practice litigation techniques, prepare witnesses and conduct a trial.

This year's finalists were Amir Sadeghy, Matthew Gatewood, Zachary Desmond and M. Todd Carroll. Presiding over the competition was the Honorable Callie V.S. Granade, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. Each finalist conducted one direct and one cross-examination and presented either an opening statement or a closing argument.

After a close competition, Judge Granade selected M. Todd Carroll as the runner-up and Amir Sadeghy as the winner of the 2003 Mock Trial Competition. The Moot Court Board wishes to congratulate Carroll and Sadeghy on their victories as well as thank all individuals who participated in all rounds of the competition.

11/17/2003 - Phi Alpha Delta Charity Auction Raises $4,280
The Annual Phi Alpha Delta Charity Auction, held on November 14, 2003 was a complete success. Professor David Caudill was the Auctioneer and generous faculty and staff provided wonderful items for the event.

This year the top two items were a framed English Deed and a Justice Rehnquist Bobble Head Doll which both sold for $400.00. Other items of interest include a Gourmet Dinner to be served by Dean David Partlett which went for $310.00, a Wine Tasting for 10 that was purchased for $300.00 and finally a dinner for four with wine which sold for $260.00.

PAD would like to thank all the faculty and staff who donated items as well as the students who came to show their support and participate in the auction. All of the money raised will go to the Rockbridge County Emergency South River Relief Fund. This fund has been set up to provide assistance to victims of Hurricane Isabel in the South River area of Rockbridge County.

11/13/2003 - PAD Food Drive a Success
The members of Phi Alpha Delta would like to extend their gratitude to all who participated in the Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity's Fall Canned Food Drive. This year, with your help, PAD collected 2100 pounds of canned foods for needy families in the Rockbridge County area. PAD would like to extend a challenge all to all law students, faculty and staff to help double this amount next semester during the PAD Spring Canned Food Drive.

11/10/2003 - Wiant Speaks at Virginia Library Association Meeting
Professor Sally Wiant '75L spoke at the annual meeting of the Virginia Library Association at the Homestead on Thursday, November 6, 2003. Professor Wiant spoke on the TEACH ACT (Technological, Education, and Copyright Harmonization ACT). The TEACH ACT addresses the use of copyrighted works using digital networks for instructional purposes. Professor Wiant will also conduct a workshop November 13 at Paul de Camp Community College in Franklin, VA for the faculty on Copyright Law for Higher Education.

The Washington and Lee University School of Law will host the American Bar Association's Regional Negotiation Competition on Nov. 15-16 in Lexington.

10/17/2003 - W&L Alumnus and Norfolk Attorney Gets Judgeship Nod from Bush
President George W. Bush has announced his intention to nominate Walter D. Kelley Jr., a Washington and Lee University alumnus and Norfolk attorney, to succeed Judge Henry C. Morgan Jr. on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

10/15/2003 - School of Law to Hold Final Round of Moot Court Competition
The Washington and Lee University School of Law will hold the final round of the 24th Annual John W. Davis Moot Court competition on Friday, Oct. 24. The topic of this year's competition is the Establishment Clause of the Constitution as related to student prayer at school functions.

Paul Fairall, dean of the Adelaide Law School in Adelaide, Australia, will discuss "Australian Terrorism Legislation and the Australian Taliban" at Washington and Lee University's School of Law on Thursday, Oct. 23.

The Honorable Sol Wachtler, a former chief judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, will deliver an address at Washington and Lee University on "Terrorism and the Law" at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10 in Classroom B of Lewis Hall, W&L's School of Law.

Bradley Smith, vice chairman of the Federal Election Commission, will speak on campaign finance reform on Monday, Oct. 6, in classroom A at Washington and Lee University's School of Law.

10/1/2003 - South River Emergency Relief Project: Contribute to the Cause
Though Lexington was spared by Hurricane Isabel, the South River community was devastated by the storm. Many, including Washington and Lee staff and employees, lost their homes and/or possessions. South River is in a declared state of emergency.

9/9/2003 - Politics Professor to Address Students at W&L's Fall Convocation
Washington and Lee University will welcome more than 1,750 undergraduates to campus Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Fall Convocation exercises. Politics Professor William F. Connelly Jr. will deliver the keynote address on W&L's nearly 96-year-old Mock Convention--considered one of the most accurate predictors of the presidential nominee of the political party currently out of the White House. The student-run convention will be held January 30-31, 2004.

Judge Thomas M. Donnelly, associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Ill., will speak at Washington and Lee University on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. in the theater of the Elrod Commons.

Sir John Baker, Downing Professor of the Laws of England and fellow of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge University, will give the inaugural lecture for the new Center for Law and History at Washington and Lee University's School of Law.

Classes will open Thursday, Aug. 21 at Washington and Lee University's School of Law, which begins the 2003-04 academic year by launching its LL.M. program for foreign attorneys seeking broader knowledge of American law.

7/18/2003 - W&L Law Student Wins First Prize in Copyright Law Competition
Jacob Penrod, a 2003 graduate of Washington and Lee University's School of Law, has won first prize in the 2003 Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition in copyright law at W&L for his paper entitled "Scratching, Sound Manipulation and the Copyright Act."

LEXINGTON, VA -- Three students at the Washington and Lee University School of Law are being honored for excellence in legal writing. Jeffery Scott, a second-year student at the School of Law, has won first place in the American Bar Association's Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law Writing Competition.

Third year student Cynthia Donley Young has won third place in the American College of Legal Medicine Bioethics Writing Competition for her paper entitled "An Examination of the Over-Regulation of Mifepristone". Her paper is scheduled for publication in the "Medical Trial Technique Quarterly."
