The student organization of the Washington and Lee University School of Law's Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment (JECE) engages and educates the legal community, policy-making community, and the general public through its journal and symposia on climate change and energy issues, as well as broader environmental law and policy issues, affecting local, national, and global communities.
By becoming involved in the publication process, JECE members enhance their leadership, organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and writing skills. The JECE holds an annual symposium, which focuses on current and interesting climate change and energy law and policy issues, as well as other progressive environmental topics.
Membership on the JECE is open to all Washington and Lee University School of Law students who demonstrate exceptional skill in legal writing and analysis in a rigorous, competitive, written tryout, which is held twice per year in the summer and early fall. The JECE's faculty advisor is Hari Osofsky, former advisor to the Western Environmental Law Center (WELC) on climate change litigation, and co-author of the forthcoming books, CLIMATE CHANGE AND PROPERTY RIGHTS: A CASEBOOK COMPLEMENT and ADJUDICATING CLIMATE CHANGE: SUB-NATIONAL, NATIONAL, AND SUPRA-NATIONAL APPROACHES.
The Washington and Lee School of Law Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment (Journal) is a student-edited periodical published by student volunteers at the Washington and Lee University School of Law, whose members comprise the JECE. The Journal includes articles, notes, case summaries, and legislative summaries from professors, practitioners, and students focused primarily on the areas of law surrounding energy and the climate, including, but not limited to, energy generation, energy usage, and climate impacts. JECE publishes the Journal solely in an online format.*
