Soon after Professor Roger D. Groot passed away on November 12, 2005, countless alumni contacted the Office of Law School Relations to say that they wanted to pay tribute to Roger's memory by establishing a permanent fund in his name. The Professor Roger D. Groot Professorship is an effort to honor Roger's memory by establishing a permanent professorship for the sort of gifted teacher and compassionate person that he was. Such a fund requires an endowment of $1.5 million.
The Groot Professorship will honor Roger's commitment and many contributions to the W&L community, its students, alumni, faculty, and staff, and it will link his name with the School of Law forever. It will be awarded to a faculty member who is an excellent teacher and who truly thrives on his or her interaction with students.
All contributions are tax-deductible. Gifts can be made with a check, credit card, stock transfer, gift of property, or other means. If you are interested in making a memorial contribution to honor Roger, send your contribution to Paul Gardner, Director of Law School Relations, W&L School of Law, Lewis Hall #517, Lexington, VA 24450-2116 or visit the online giving form and specify in the "Special Instructions" field that your donation is for the Groot Professorship. If you would like to volunteer to help with the effort, contact Elizabeth Branner, Assistant Director of Law School Advancement (brannere@wlu.edu, 540-458-8191).
