Professor Calhoun. He taught my Contracts class during my first semester at W&L, and although I never developed a passion for the subject (I'm still a little confused about how to calculate damages), I enjoyed Professor Calhoun's historical and literary references throughout his lectures. I've also been able to get to know Professor Calhoun and his wife outside of the classroom setting. They both have provided a lot of support and encouragement for me over the past year, which has been truly invaluable.
The friendly people. During my first few days in Lexington, I went to a local bank to open a checking account. I ended up having a long conversation with the teller, who gave me advice on everything from the best restaurants in town to her favorite hair salon. Having grown up in a small town in Maryland, Lexington's welcoming atmosphere always reminds me of home.
As an International Studies major in undergrad, I developed a passion for issues relating to human rights, particularly in the international arena. I felt that law school was the best avenue for me to pursue a career in this field.
One of the major factors that drew me to W&L was its small size. Your professors are always available to talk with you about class, job opportunities, or anything else you might need. Small class sizes ensure that you get to know your fellow classmates as well as your professors, and make the Socratic method much less intimidating!
I am the treasurer of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA). My membership in BLSA has given me the opportunity to get to know many of the other minority students at W&L, and although we all come from different backgrounds and experiences, there is a definite atmosphere of understanding and support. As a 1L, the upperclassmen provided me with a lot of guidance throughout the year, whether they were offering study tips or just someone to talk to. I'm excited to serve as an officer of BLSA this year, and we hope to continue to provide support and education for students at W&L, as well as increase our focus on serving the Lexington community.
