LL.M. Application
Forms:
Prospective LL.M. students should read through the following instructions before submitting their application to Washington and Lee. Applicants to the Washington and Lee LL.M. degree program using the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service must follow Section I of the application procedures below. Applicants to the LL.M. degree program not using the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service must follow Section II below. Although registration with the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service is not required, it is preferred.
We strongly suggest students use the LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS) for the following reasons:
- Using CAS can save time and money, especially if an applicant intends to apply to multiple U.S. or Canadian graduate law degree programs.
- Applicants need only obtain transcripts and other required academic credentials once in order to make them available for all law school applications. LSAC will compile, authenticate and distribute both university records and TOEFL score(s) - if required.
- Several reports to law schools are included in the registration fee, and additional reports can be purchased.
- Once an applicant enrolls for the service, CAS reports are available for a period of several years.
SECTION I. – For Applicants using the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service Applicants to the Washington and Lee LL.M. degree program may register with the Law School Admissions Council's (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service. Please visit www.llm.lsac.org to register. The LSAC will collect, authenticate and distribute your university records and TOEFL scores. Five reports to law schools are included in the registration fee of $185.

SECTION II. – For Applicants not using the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service Submit the following:
- Completed, signed and dated application form
- Personal statement
- A legal writing sample
- Applicants must also provide recommendation forms to three (3) people who are either law faculty, lawyers or judges with whom you have worked. Each recommender should return the form directly to Washington and Lee School of Law.
- Official report of results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including the Test of Written English (TWE), if your education has been conducted primarily in a language other than English. Washington and Lee's institutional code is 5887.
- Please choose one of the following options for submitting transcript(s):
- Option 1:
- A Credential Evaluation Report prepared by World Education Services, Inc. (www.wes.org), an international educational credential evaluation service. The report should include: an Equivalency Summary, a Credential Analysis and a Course-by-Course Analysis of your undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Please consider using this service if you received your law degree outside of the U.S.
- Option 2:
- In lieu of a credential analysis prepared by WES, you may supply transcripts from all prior colleges, law schools or graduate schools attended (even if you did not receive a degree). Request that the appropriate official at each school place an official transcript and proof of degree (if proof of degree does not appear on the transcript) in a sealed envelope and sign or affix a stamp across the seal. If the official cannot supply an original transcript, he/she may provide a certified copy. These sealed envelopes should be included, unopened, with your application. Schools may mail transcripts directly to the School of Law, if they prefer.
- If a transcript is not in English, it must be accompanied by an English translation. If the school does not provide an English translation, you may take the sealed transcript to an official translator who may open the envelope to complete and certify the translation. The translator should then put the original transcript, the envelope in which the original transcript came and the English translation into another envelope, which the translator must seal and sign or stamp across the seal. Include this sealed envelope, unopened, with your application.
- If a transcript does not show class standing, request that the institution provide an estimate of such standing, if possible. Official statements by schools regarding class rank and grades should also come to us in sealed envelopes, signed or stamped across the seal by the appropriate school official.
- Applicants accepted for the LL.M. program who are currently in their last year of schooling for the first degree in law will be asked to provide additional final transcripts and proof of degree upon graduation.
- Official statement of class rank. Contact all institutions from which you earned a degree and have them forward an official statement of class rank directly to Washington and Lee. If no official class rank is available, request that the institution provide an estimate of such standing, if possible. Official statements by schools regarding class rank and grades should also come to us in sealed envelopes, signed or stamped across the seal by the appropriate school official.
- Nonrefundable application fee of $60, payable to Washington and Lee University. Payment must be sent with the application. Acceptable forms of payment are checks in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank or money orders in U.S. dollars.

Financial Information Enrollment in the LL.M. program is contingent on the applicant presenting proof of sufficient financial resources. In the ordinary case, this proof will be in the form of a letter from the applicant, a letter from the applicant's sponsor (if applicable) and a letter from a bank or other financial institution verifying that the applicant or the applicant's sponsor has funds sufficient to cover the anticipated expenses. Washington and Lee will be able to offer only limited financial assistance to its LL.M. students; applicants are therefore encouraged to apply for financial assistance in their home countries. Tuition for the 2009-2010 school year is $40,730.
Application Deadline Applications for the LL.M. program, as well as all supporting materials, must be received by Washington and Lee by March 1 for admission to the program beginning in August.
