I chose to attend law school, in part, because I believe the J.D. is a flexible degree, and its holder isn't limited to a single profession. For example, many of the financial professionals I encountered through my previous job held law degrees. I also chose to attend law school because I was motivated and ready for the challenge—never forget that it will be challenging!
I chose to attend Washington and Lee Law in particular because of its intimate academic environment. A good friend of mine recently graduated from the law school with the Class of 2008. From her, I learned that W&L Law—with its outstanding faculty—was the best fit for my legal education.
Professor Howard stands out in my mind as "favorite professor". She teaches, among other things, Contracts and Legal Writing. I was fortunate to have had her individualized attention and guidance during the first semester of my 1L year. When I worked as a legal assistant, I didn't write legal memos. Prof. Howard, with her sometimes acidic pen, whipped me into shape! In the classroom, Prof. Howard is enthusiastic and presents a well-organized lesson. Caveat: Prof. Howard favors Duke over Carolina.
Hands down: The view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from my window. Also, the neighbors invite me and my roommate over for dinner—that wouldn't happen where I come from…
Currently, I am a member of Phi Delta Phi, an international legal fraternity. Our local chapter, Tucker Inn, is dedicated to academic achievement and community service. Justice Powell was a member of Tucker Inn, and I am honored to lead our chapter and continue this tradition.
I am also a staffwriter for the Washington and Lee Law Review. My participation as a staffwriter allows me to develop my legal writing and analysis through an intense, yet rewarding, note-writing process. My other job as a staffwriter—cite-checking—is far less glamorous but nonetheless advances my legal research skills.
Outside law school, I practice and perform with the University Shenandoah Symphony Orchestra. I'm happy to report that law school, at least here at Washington and Lee, doesn't require students to abandon their talents or hobbies! The University accommodates all students with varied interests and this is just one of the many ways to get involved outside the walls of Sydney Lewis Hall.
